Cable can never even hope to compete with DSL or FIOS, not unless they stop people in the same loop from sharing bandwidth lolol which will never happen ... lol
I hate cable companies (and in my particular instance when I say cable companies I am mostly referring to my experience with Time Warner Roadrunner Cable Internet, in my area) ... because they use such drastic (and yet obvious to the educated) LIES in their marketing ploys to make people think that they are going to get all these high speeds when in fact, if you have alot of people in your loop neighbhoorhood, and all ON and ONLINE at the same time, you won't get but a fraction of what they tell you. Of course they never expect any of their customers to be intelligent or educated or they would TREAT THEM AS SUCH. Which really speaks bad of a company who expects all their customers to be stupid enough to go with their service and pay them $45 a month for cable (which is what Time Warner Roadrunner charges) when you can have FULL SPEED for $15 less at $30 per month, with Verizon DSL :-) haha And the cable companies will never tell you THAT, within their marketing schpiel, because it isn't good PR for them to be admitting the faults of their supposedly "super fast 5-8M" or whatever system that they vaunt at every opportunity ... lol Even now, Verizon offers a lower-class DSL at 768K 128K, at dial-up prices for only $15 per month, which is in the same area as most ISP's offer for dial-up prices! Hopefully, that too might drive AO-Hell just a lil further out of the business ... or so I hope. thank god.
I know not everyone lives within the right distance of the local loop for even a 768K DSL connection, but if Verizon built more CO centers, and didn't just rebuild their fiber lines, we could have DSL everywhere and not just have to rely on wireless or satellite for the far-out and rural "BFE" areas of the world ...
I AM GREEDY AND I WANT ALL MY BANDWIDTH ALL TO MYSELF, dammit lol
And that is why I moved to DSL and why I hope to have FIOS, when it comes ... so i can leave those who have Cable Internet (and those who yet end up with par-56K fractional connections ...) far in the dust behind me ... hahahahahahaha!!
Just one question tho .... what are they going to be doing when MORE people have FIOS and MORE people have 30M connections once they become more affordable? They already tried upgrading THEIR technology once already, so that people can eek a lil more speed out of their cable ... but it really wasn't much if you think about it. Going up from 1.5-2M to 5-8M for residential is where the "business class" was at originally anyways. All they did was shift things up a notch. FIOS goes way beyond all that... When Verizon has 30M connections and fiber all the way from your home right into the backbone of the internet GINA, how can cable compete unless they do something like FTTP FIOS too?
LOL
cable sucks!!!!!!!
I wish Nikola Tesla were still alive to see all of this .... he made all of this possible :-) especially wireless... he would be simply amazed ...
Another question I have, is, what FREQUENCY or SPECTRUM does the fiber on the network OPERATE at? IS it on the same spectrum as visible light, or something lower higher? And is there anyway to operate on a wider or higher spectrum that will allow more speed? Or do we not have fast enough optical processors for that level of "light speed" yet? :-)
And would LASERS (or something similiar) be practical at all, for communicating bits on ethernet or the Internet? Since IT IS ALSO light, or a manifestation of it ... And what is the top speed of communication using InfraRed and/or Ultra-violet? And what about Microwave, X- or Gamma- rays within protected sheathing? Or any other kind of "broadband" communication? If only I knew someone in the IEEE I'd ask them, but I don't .... so I'll ask here :-)
