I am attempting to use FIOS and SageTV. The DVR Verizon supplies has a few problems, its capacity is too small, it costs too much for the limited use I would give it and it also is a power hog when on all the time as it would need to be.

I have found that Verizon FIOS has almost no clear QAM channels. None of the useful basic  channels are clear, as in the prime channels of the local broadcast stations.

The next attempt was to record through the settop box but it always comes up from power off in a stand condition and then a large and apparently unpredictable  delay is encountered in getting it into a normal mode and to accept the first channel selection. Not something a IR blaster can handle. Even if the "power hog" box was on all the time it still does not seem there is a IR sequence that will always get it to work no matter what condition it was last left in. Has anyone found a work around?

I use SageTV with my FIOS - been doing it for many months on a few STB's and the results are great. I use a Hauppauge HDTV box (connects to the component outputs) and I use a USB-UIRT to change channels. I leave the FIOS STB on all the time, so I don't have to deal with power on/off issues.
