An update. I had Verizon FIOS installed yesterday (I live in South Tampa, Florida) and the Internet access works fine. I also have two phone lines and one of them is presenting problems--I can dial out, but no one has yet managed to dial in. Also, when dialing out I have trouble disconnecting from a call. I've been to various help desks. The automatic voice response unit for the FIOS customer service line told me there were no representatives working on a weekend and when I called the primary Verizon trouble line I was given a number belonging to one of the third-party contractors who perform the neighborhood cabling. Very frustrating. Finally, I managed to get hold of someone in the FIOS 24 hour service center (by again calling the main Verizon line, getting a real person and having them dial in to the FIOS facility). Now it's Saturday and I'm waiting for a repair person to take another look at my internal (copper) wiring. The problem has not yet been diagnosed.
As to the Internet access, I'm getting almost 5Mbs downstream and almost 2Mbs upstream. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed much of a change from DSL, although I can now push files up to my Web servers a lot faster and downloads obviously take less time. Ordinary Web surfing hasn't changed much.
