I am trying to help my parents. They recently got FIOS for internet and phone. Let me say it shouldn't take Verizon 3 days to install. They had multiple tech guys over there and on the phone with other tech guys to get her wireless set up. So am here trying to do some research for her and help her out. Things the tech said to her just didn't make sense.

She has the router installed downstairs. The connections is good I think it was 50 mbs?  But it will not stay connected upstairs. I estimate its only about 30 feet. It will connect and disconnect. He said first she needed to install Firefox or Chrome? Can you beleive that? Then said she didn't have enough memory and I checked the specs on Verizon's web site and she meets the requirements. He wanted her to uninstall all her software and OS and reinstall it.

So my question is what the wireless range for these routers? Could it be the wirelss card in the computer they installed? I am really tech savy but when it comes to laptops and wireless I have no idea. I personally use desktop with cable.

Have you checked to see whether the connection is stable downstairs?  Bring the laptop to where the router is and see what happens.

ok first off
sadly you're not going to get a straight answer on this one from many people

the router has a 802.11g capabilities
i would definitely do what fiosmaniac says.
but also check what type of wireless card the computer has, 802.11b maybe? (has shorter range)
if the signal is low or intermittent when near the router then the problem is more than likely interference.
i would move the router to another location in the home to test this out
you can disconnect the coax cable connection on the back for a little bit to do this
see if the computer still connects to the in home wireless network with no problems
