Okay so your in west MI, ATT has a large customer base through out all of Michigan. Over here on the eastern side of MI where I am and around me; FLINT, Genesee, Oakland, Lansing & Detroit ect. all have AT&T usually over Comcast and are using Von-age (likely/ I don't). As for Cellular Verizon and T-mobile rule services for mobile (A&TT owns and is Cingular and T-mobile, *short version). AT&T doesnt have a "Monopoly" here and is the best provider of Michigan, because Michigan is its main home-base, this is where AT&T got it's first set of "legs" to do business.
I'm fine with their new U-verse (triple/custom pack) service which is likely AT&T's competitive answer to Verizon's FiOS, even though at the moment they are not offering speeds over 25 MB yet, and I said "yet". AT&T plans to launch higher speeds soon, how soon I don't know exactly for sure, but the more time they have they'll be using that to their advantage with being eventually faster "upgrade" options through U-verse. U-verse has been expanding from a base point in lower south Flint since 2005, and is a reliable service thus far. AT&T does claim in both marketing and tech divisions that its a 100% fiber optic service, which I believe in that claim so far. Do beware that they use cheap cat-e5 belkin for Ethernet lines that they give you- for plugging into the wall jacks, so be sure to go out and get your trusted company Ethernet lines such as "Corning". So that way you will have less interference with all your wired devices. I suggest Cat-e6 lines, to prep you for the future of FiOS.
I am waiting for FiOS Cause I'm a real Core gamer at heart (4-6 or more hours a day), I use the internet my main source for business too, so I have plenty reasons to get FiOS as soon as its available here in the "Mitten" (MI). I'm a big geek, and every fun loving geek out there knows what FiOS means; Ultimate in gaming no down-time or lagging out badly ever! (*drools, lol). You could probably even host a PC, Xbox LIVE, or PSN PLUS+ Lan party too, and still see no big bumps in service. Which would be great to be able to do!
Cheer up west MI if us in the Eastern half do well for FiOS it may go your way very soon, since east MI is Version's biggest customer base for mobile hands down, shouldn't be that hard to get FiOS in here. I think even vaguely recalling Version trying to set up new services like home phone and Internet paving the way for FiOS- back in '05, but out-cry'd AT&T's lawyer's about overstepping bounds or something like that. Who knows what happened? think it may have been because AT&T needed time to catch up to the mighty FiOS and made U-Verse as the competitive result, however I'm just speculating the most likely as a CEO and Entrepreneur I am.
Hope this helps everyone waiting in MI- like me, from one Native American to every American whom reads this; MERRY CHRISTMAS & Happy Holidays! May we have a grand 2011 and make the best of the new year...
