Letterbox for Standard Definition?

Hi, I'm looking to get FiOS TV installed. I'm ordering it online, and it's asking me what kind of set top box I need. I have an SD TV, and I've been burned by Dish Network because their SD receiver only shows channels in full screen. So my question is, if I get the SD set top box for FiOS, will I be able to watch channels in letterbox format, or do I have to get the HD box for that?
