I am very upset about something new on my FIOS DVR box. Before recently the FIOS box would not up convert non HD programming. So if I put on channel 2 it would broadcast it to the TV as 780 and the TV would dynamically adjust the scr to wide mode stretching it out. (No black bars on the sides) Likewise if I put on 502 (HD channel 2) it would again change the scr format to HD wide.
Well now it seems to be upconverting it to 1080 and Channel 2 is now the old format with the black bars on the sides. This is causing burn in on my TV. I can see permanent lines on the sides as a result. I called Verizon and they said the picture is fine therefore it is not their problem.
I did a test. I plugged in my DVD played, which is not HD and the TV recognized this as 780 and adjusted the picture accordingly. So the TV is doing the right thing still. I believe they changed something in the BOX software and is always pushing 1080 now. I looked at the settings to turn off upconvert but found nothing.
Anyone else see this or know how to fix it?
while the stb is turned ON try this button combination
[in sequence] power > select > menu
its kind of a hard menu to get to for some people, but if you manage to get to it you will have an option there called "4:3 override". You can change that option to "stretch". that should fix it
