I have FIOS and the digital TV with a DVR from Verizon.

The router they provide is crap and am looking to replace it, but the "service" comes into my house through a coax cable which feeds into the wireless router and my DVR. The box outside my house has both coax and ethernet hookups, but the tech told me that if I hooked up the ethernet connection I wouldn't be able to use the coax anymore which would break the "guide" features for the TV and effectively make my dvr useless.

Any ideas?

It's the small size of the router NAT tables in the actiontec that causes the issues.  [ If ] you can get one of their new routers made by Westell the size of the NAT tables in that will relieve your issues.  In the meantime, you can plug the router of your choice into one of the LAN ports of the actiontec and use that for your computers and games, etc.  [ this will require some manipulation of the settings on the actiontec, but it's easily do-able. ]

Or you probably can pay them to come out to activate the ethernet from the box outside your house.  They can do it.  Your coax will continue to work.  you could end up with the ethernet cable coming out of the box outside and then being pushed inside your home via the same existing hole where the power cord currently goes through the wall to the box outside, where they would then install 1 ethernet jack, but they won't snake that ethernet through your house.  That would be up to you or for you to contract out to someone else.       [ this would require calling their order\sales dept., not their tech support.  tech support can send someone out on a 'trouble ticket', but to receive a new set-up other than what was originally installed is not a 'trouble ticket']
