I just ordered FIOS and am very excited about what it has to offer. I am switching from Cox cable, which has been pretty good but I know FIOS will be better (and it's cheaper).

Here's a brief description of the layout of my home. Currently, a coax enters through a basement wall and runs about 40 ft above the ceiling to a shelf in the middle of the basement where I have a patch panel, a multi-port switch, my WiFi router, the cable modem, and a bunch of coax splitters. Everything is colocated at the shelf, and all coax cables going to the rest of the house as well as all CAT5 cables are home run to this shelf in the basement. I had the foresight to have the basement finisher run an extra CAT5 line from the point of entry through the wall to the home run location just in case, but it is currently not used. There are CAT5 jacks in 12 rooms in my house and dual coax wall plates in 9 rooms. I currently have 3 HD televisions and 6 computers connected and being used, some of them by WiFi.

My question is, how will FIOS be configured inside my house? Is a fiber cable brought through the wall? If so, is Verizon willing to pull it through the basement ceiling to my shelf and consolidate everything there as I have it now? Or, will they stop it at the point of entry and want to connect a CAT5 cable from there. Remember, both the CAT5 network cables AND the TV coaxes all fan out from the shelf, which is 40 feet from the point of entry and the basement is finished (though there is an accessible path to pull a cable if they will do it).

Can anyone tell me what to expect when the installer arrives?

Thanks in advance!

The fiber line is terminated at the ONT which is placed on the side of your house near your existing cable and phone boxes.  Out of this ONT will be your coax (TV), Cat5 (internet), and rj11 (phone).  From that point it will be up to you and what you tell the installer to do with 'em.  Your centralized distribution will most likely be the best solution to run the lines to and the installer will make it happen.  There won't be any fiber run into the house.  The installer may also want to replace any splitters and coax ends if they don't meet Verizon specs.

Since I first posted, I received an email from the Verizon rep and found information on the various devices they'll install. I am hoping it will work out as I describe below (nice and tidy).

The website says the ONT may be installed either outside or inside the house. Since the power outlet for the ONT power supply needs to be inside in my case, I suspect the better location for the ONT is inside my breaker panel closet. There's a single GFI outlet in there already in use by my alarm system, but I can change it to a double if necessary. There is a 18"x12" unused area on the plywood panel, so the ONT could be mounted to it there. There is a phone punch block, a CAT6 cable reserved for just such a situation that goes directly to my equipment shelf, and a junction for the existing coax TV cable.

So assuming they'll be willing to put the ONT inside, this install should be a breeze for them.

Verizon wants to have easy access to their equipment [ the ONT ], so, if the general climate in the area of the country where you live allows it, they will place the ONT outside, and install a battery backup and DC converter on the inside of your house immediately adjacent to where the ONT is placed outside.  Otherwise they will bring it all inside.     Oh!  I see this is an several-months-old posting  . . .what happened ??
