DVR Question - Motorola Box Interface (SATA)?

Has anyone tried or verified if it is possible to use/add an external hard drive for extended storage space?

The Comcast box I have has the port, but the capability is disabled on it.
Will/does the Verizon FIOS HD/DVR box allow for an external SATA drive to be attached and used?

In an update to my original request:

I now have FIOS, while I haven't tried it directly, I have called FIOS and they say it is not enabled.
Currently though I have not run in to a problem of recording space.
