On my existing FIOS internet I use a homemade router, and I've really got no desire to replace it with the FIOS TV unit if I don't have to. There are a bunch of solutions to the problem, so I'm open to suggestions. Things I've come up with so far:

1) Can I hook the FIOS TV router to the internet, and forward some inbound ports coming from the internet to the my router? That would let me hide my own router behind the FIOS TV one, which would be acceptable I suppose.

2) Can I do the opposite, and hook mine to the internet and forward ports to theirs? That would let me keep mine directly on the internet, and hide Verizon's.

3) If I already have cat5 sitting at my TV's do I still need their MOCA network for anything? I suppose that depends upon whether the internet traffic originates in the STBs. I know that their VOIP box initiates all connections itself, so it's transparent to my router, which is nice.

i've got a 4th suggestion for you
now..
the first two options sound just fine
the number one option is the one you should go with if all else fails.
all you'd need to make sure is that the routers don't have conflicting gateway addresses...
but you're probably a computer guy so you already knew that...i'm just saying. that's the worst problem you'll encounter.

number two..
hm..
i guess it could work
i mean the router just needs to have an internet connection
there's no rules as to how you go about doing that
once it does have internet connectivity its up to the routers to make sure the STB's have ip connectivity
again.....this all sounds like one of those "DUH!" situations.
i'm just pointing out the most obvious probs you'd run into.

we'll forget about number 3 because you NEED a NIM
so here's my suggestion.

before the actiontec router came out verizon used stand alone NIM's that connected to a regular old D-link router via CAT5.
they are made by motorola
that's definitely the route i would take if i didn't wanna get rid of my router
call in to the billing or sales department and you could probably still order one
honestly i don't know how you could get a hold of one.
verizon does still install them in some situations..
regardless.....Good Luck
