Buying Third Party STB's; Can You Save $ on Monthly Fees?

Is it possible to use a third party purchased HD STB instead of renting the HD STB from Verizon at $9.95 per month?  What about the SD HTB at $3.95 per month? I want to hook up one HD TV and one old analog TV and wish to hold down the costs if at all possible by buying compatible equipment.

The issue would be to not get the Verizon supplied STB's at installation but to buy them later. Of course then there may be a hookup issue. Also what if you buy the Motorola HD DVR box later. Willthat work or will Verizon have to set it up?

unfortunately it is only possible to use verizon issue set top boxes
you can buy one from verizon and not have to pay the leasing fee

To set up the STB all verizon needs is the serial number to tie it into your video order.
