D-link router options questions.

Are the misc. settings in the D-link router such as block ping compatible with FIOS and is it wise to enable some of these additional security settings for added protection.  I tried ping block but it seems the router didn't except the change upon applying the change.  It reverted to allow ping and then could not establish connection.  Had to reboot computer to get back on the network.  Also had difficulty with firmware flash thru Verizon's web site.  It didn't confirm the flash.  Instead my router got reset and I lost the ppoe connection type and had to manually reset it with verizon tech on the phone.

At this point I'm not at all comfortable messing with much in the router menu.  I was going to try open DNS.org but have doubts it would work.  Anybody using open dns with a fios connection?
