The traditional thinking that competition leads to better deals for consumers is validated here. After Verizon offered its FiOS service — which offers downstream speeds of 5, 15 and 30 Mbps — in Leesburg, Va., Adelphia responded with a 16 Mbps cable service. The same kind of competition is apparent in Oyster Bay, New York, an area steeped in Theodore Roosevelt history. Verizon launched FiOS in mid-April; two months later, Cablevision used the town as a bully pulpit for a 50 Mbps data offering based on Narad Networks' gear. The offering could serve as a model for bringing voice, video and data services to the rest of Cablevision's service area. Ironically, after both industries invested so much in creating high-capacity infrastructures, analysts say that the precise speed becomes meaningless beyond a certain point. These providers seem to be intent on having the fastest network for marketing reasons. Pricing skirmishes also are ongoing between the industries.
